Teaching STATEMENT

In the classroom I strive to make classical and contemporary texts come alive for students, no matter their level of expertise. In fact, I specialize in making seemingly arcane intellectual topics appealing to those with little to no experience in rigorous textual analysis.

My background combines academic education and practical training from the world’s finest theater schools. My graduate work towards two Masters from Columbia University qualify me to teach a number of historical and dramaturgical topics, such as text analysis for actors, theater history, and models of dramatic structure.

My graduate study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, along with years of experience working professionally as an actor and director, have prepared me to teach a variety of practical topics, including scenework, accents and dialects, classical versework, and directing.

One area of particular interest and expertise is original text work for performing Shakespeare (often called First Folio Technique, though I teach a variation that makes this moniker inaccurate). I wrote my undergraduate thesis on this topic and have studied/used it extensively as part of both my MA degrees. I am always looking for opportunities to share my passion for this subject with other theater professionals.

I have experience lecturing and leading workshops at the high school and college level, as well as with professional actors of all ages and life stages. My teaching style is flexible and I enjoy adapting to the needs of my students.

TEACHING Experience

Starting September 2025

September 2019-May 2022

September 2011-May 2015

I'll be teaching Theatre History from 1900-Today, Topics in Theatre History, and Directing in the BFA conservatory program at Five Towns College in Dix Hills, NY.

I re-envisioned and taught a year-long course on Western Theater History and Dramaturgy at Tom Todoroff Conservatory, until the conservatory program was dissolved in 2022.

I presented bi-semesterly lectures on Shakespeare and his world to non-major students in Intro to World Theatre at Emerson College.
