Safe As Houses

Full length. Semi-Finalist for the O'Neill, 2023.

A city couple moves to the suburbs to start a family, only to be met with a host of anthropomorphic characters including an urbane, commuting mountain lion, the bumbling personification of their Victorian home, and their aggressive, anti-authoritarian lawn. Wife, a playwright, struggles to conceive both a baby and a play while her marriage begins to fracture under the pressures of creation. Laced with magical realism and metatheatrics, Safe As Houses examines the challenges of being forced to choose between two worlds that sustain you. When the boxes people put us in threaten to smother us, sometimes the only solution is to expand until they break.

Hildegard von Bingen was read her last rites at the age of nine, and bricked up into a cell where she was supposed to spend the rest of her days in religious contemplation. Instead, she became one of the most powerful and accomplished women in medieval history. A high-powered abbess, a popular speaker, prolific composer, groundbreaking naturalist, original philosopher, and mystic visionary, this one-woman rock musical also in the nascent phases of ideation will tell the story of Hildegard, vis-a-vis her conflicts with the powerful men of the church.

Bea Ludwig, a onetime Pulitzer finalist, clings to romantic fixations on all the wrong girls, her social justice TikTok following, and her barista job to distract from intractable writer's block. A series of crises at the coffee shop leads to a confrontation with her employer and friend, who convinces her that she needs to look inward if she's going to reach her true potential as an artist. The events of the story are based (quite loosely) on the historical life and persona of Beethoven, and the piece re-envisions four of Beethoven’s most notable compositions as modern day musical theater songs.
